Paleo, Gluten-free + Dairy-free S'mores! With vegan, egg-free, and nut-free options.

Love s’mores but need Paleo or Gluten-free + Dairy-free S’mores? I’ve got you! Our family of 7 has been eating Paleo-ish, gluten-free + dairy-free for over 6 years (you can read our story on how we transitioned to this lifestyle HERE). We also love to camp and a backyard fire-it is one of our favorite family weekend traditions. So, naturally, we had to figure out a way to make s’mores that were Paleo or at least gluten-free and dairy-free. 

Whether you are looking for Paleo or Gluten-free + Dairy-free S’mores will change what s’more ingredients work for your dietary restrictions. So, I am going to divide them into two categories: ingredients that are Paleo (which means they are ALSO gluten-free and dairy-free but have no grains or refined sugar) and those that are not Paleo but are at least Gluten-free + Dairy-free. 

Paleo S’mores

Paleo s’mores used to be very tricky to make. Everything had to be homemade. I will give you those options and they are more budget-friendly, if you need it or don’t have access to the pre-made items. And also, it’s fantastic that the food industry now has these store-bought Paleo options!

Paleo Marshmallows

Store-bought paleo marshmallows are hard to find, as most are made with some kind of refined white sugar. I have seen online this option: Sweet Apricity AIP and Paleo Marshmallows but haven’t tried it personally. If you have or have another store-bought Paleo marshmallow you love, please drop it in the comments! 

Usually for Paleo marshmallows, we just make our own! They feel intimidating at first and the recipes look long, but they really aren’t that hard and we have had great success roasting homemade marshmallows. We love the recipe here or here. I also have found if we leave the homemade marshmallows out on the counter for a day to get them a little stale, they roast even better!

Paleo Graham Crackers or Cookies

Again, when we started eating Paleo, there were not a lot of store-bought options available for Paleo graham crackers or cookies. So, I made my own EASY 5-ingredient Paleo Graham Cracker recipe which we still often use just because the ingredients are simple and nutrient-dense, and it’s more budget-friendly than buying any. 

But, I’m thrilled that Simple Mills has come out with several Paleo cookies that would be great for s’mores. They have their Oreo-like chocolate sandwich cookies or their crunchy almond flour Chocolate Chip cookies (a little small, but you can make it work if needed). 

Paleo Chocolate

For the chocolate part of your Paleo S’more, you have a few options. The easiest is if you can find Hu Chocolate. Whether that be a Hu chocolate bar you break into pieces and use (a little thick but easy!) or Hu gems or chocolate chips. All are Paleo, sweetened only by coconut sugar. They are a little pricey, but taste good and melt well. 

If you are looking for a DIY option that is more affordable, I use my Paleo Magic Shell (the homemade option) to create almost a melted chocolate that we just brush onto the cracker or cookies. No needing to wait for the chocolate to melt and still get that delicious gooey chocolate layer. 

Gluten-free + Dairy-free S’mores

If you don’t need Paleo, just looking for Gluten-free + Dairy-free S’mores, there are a LOT of options out there for you. I love that they are becoming more and more mainstream and I can get many at my local Walmart. Wahoo!

Gluten-free + Dairy-free Marshmallows

Many marshmallows are naturally gluten-free + dairy-free. Though, if you have celiacs, double check your labels, as some contain trace amounts that would be problematic for you. They are mostly corn syrup and sugar. 

One option we love that is also vegan, egg-free, with no corn syrup and are plant-based is Dandies. If we aren’t making homemade Paleo Marshmallows, we probably use these the most. I can only find them at my local natural food store. 

The Dandies ingredients are: Tapioca Syrup, Cane Sugar, Filtered Water, Tapioca Starch, Carrageenan, Soy Protein, Natural Vanilla Flavor. Contains: Soy. Gluten Free. Dairy Free.

Gluten-free + Dairy-free Cookies or Crackers

I feel like the options for these are almost endless. Which is a far cry from just 6 years ago when we started eating gluten-free + dairy-free as a family! Here are our top 3 favorites. Feel free to add your favorites in the comments!

  • Gluten-free Oreos: Yes, mainstream Oreo brand finally came out with gluten-free Oreos! And, Oreos of all kinds were already vegan so they are dairy-free too. We started making S’mOreos a few years ago and have never looked back. SO good! We actually like our S’mOreos with cookie, peanut butter, and roasted marshmallow. YUM!

  • Enjoy Life Food Cookies: Enjoy Life cookies are top 14 allergens free, making them super approachable for a variety of dietary needs. Here’s some favorite combinations:
    • We love the birthday cake crunchy cookies spread with melted dairy-free white chocolate chips and a roasted marshmallow.
    • Or, they have crunchy chocolate chip or double chocolate cookies that are a good size as well. I recommend their crunchy varieties versus their soft baked. The soft baked doesn’t hold up as well for s’mores. We also added Justin Peanut Butter Cup mini cups to this s’more (below) with crunchy chocolate chip cookies below = next level delicious!

Gluten-free + Dairy-free S'mores

Gluten-free + Dairy-free Chocolate

Our favorite dairy-free chocolate is Enjoy Life Foods mini-chips, which we buy at Walmart or on Amazon. We melt them by the side of the fire in a glass dish, on a camping stove in a pot, or at home in the microwave and then paint them onto the cookie melted. That method works great and ensures the chocolate gets melted! 

There are also a few other dairy-free chocolate chip brands out there that come and go, but Enjoy Life is the brand we buy the most.
