The Best Gluten-Free Bread (That You’ll Actually Want to Eat)
Let’s be real—gluten-free bread has a reputation, and not always a great one. If you’ve ever bitten into a slice that crumbled into dust or had the texture of a cardboard, you know exactly what I mean.
When our family first went gluten-free, bread was one of the hardest things to give up. It’s such a staple—toast in the morning, sandwiches at lunch, a cozy grilled cheese on a cold day.
But here’s the thing: while gluten-free bread might not be exactly the same as the wheat-filled loaves you grew up with, that doesn’t mean it has to be sad. Over the years, we’ve tried so many options—some good, some truly awful—and we’ve finally narrowed down the ones that are worth coming back to. We wanted to answer the question: What’s the BEST gluten-free bread?
This post is for you if you’ve been missing the comfort of bread but don’t want to waste time (or money) on another terrible slice of gluten-free bread. I’ll walk you through our go-to picks—and what makes them winners in our gluten-free household. Spoiler: it’s not about perfection, but about finding what actually works in real life.
Because feeding a family with food restrictions is hard enough—bread shouldn’t be the thing that breaks you. You don’t need fancy ingredients or hours in the kitchen, just some real-life tested options that make sandwiches possible again. Ready to find your favorite? Let’s do this together.
DISCLAIMER: All of these are reviews of bread I could find at nation-wide stores such as Walmart, Target, Whole Foods, Sprouts, or Trader Joe’s. Though there are some delicious boutique breads out there (my favorite is Plantiful Kitchen – use code WHOLEFOODFOR7 to save 10%!), I didn’t include those in this blog post.
Gluten-free Bread We Won’t Buy Again
To be clear, I am SO grateful there are so many gluten-free bread choices on the market right now! I truly applaud all the brands for making gluten-free bread easier to find. This is not against any brand, just a simple statement that their product, as is, isn’t something we would spend our money on again.
All of the ratings are out of 5, with 5 being the highest, 1 being the lowest. Ingredients are accurate as of the time of this blog post, but breads can always be reformulated so please double check the current ingredients. Listed in order of lowest rating to highest in each category.
Canyon Bakehouse Sourdough Style

Size: 3 out of 5 (4″x3.5″)
Taste: 1 out of 5
Texture: 1.25 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: WATER, BROWN RICE FLOUR, TAPIOCA FLOUR, YEAST, WHOLE GRAIN, SORGHUM FLOUR, POTATO STARCH, CULTURED BROWN RICE FLOUR, EXPELLER PRESSED CANOLA OIL, TAPIOCA STARCH, EGGS, CANE SUGAR, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: XANTHAN GUM, EGG WHITES, SEA SALT, LACTIC ACID, ACETIC ACID, FUMARIC ACID, ENZYMES CONTAINS: EGGS
Canyon Bake House has many varieties we enjoy and you will find in the next section. So, this is definitely not shade on the brand, this variety is just a miss. My 13 year old said, “This tastes like sourdough that has gone bad.” None of us made it past the first bite, the rest went into the trash. I checked the expiration date – it wasn’t expired. Something about this one is just off.
Base Culture White Bread
Size: 2 out of 5 (3.5″x3.5″)
Taste: 2 out of 5
Texture: 1.5 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: Water, resistant tapioca starch, tapioca starch, coconut oil, honey, tapioca fiber, flax meal, coconut flour, psyllium husk, egg white powder, apple cider vinegar, sea salt, yeast, hemp protein, almond flour, cashew flour, chickpea flour CONTAINS: Egg, Almond, Coconut, Cashew
The taste of this one was ok – not amazing, not terrible. But what really wrote this one off for us was the texture. It was super crumbly, just leaving you with a mouthful of dry crumbs. The top crust peeled off of all of the pieces. Would not buy this one again.
BFree White Loaf
Size: 4 out of 5 (4.5″x3.5″)
Taste: 1.5 out of 5
Texture: 2 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: Water, Sourdough 21% (Rice Flour, Water), Corn Starch, Rice Flour, Psyllium Husk, Sunflower Seeds Oil, Buckwheat Flour, Rice Syrup, Pea Protein, Thickeners (Carbohydrate Gum), Salt, Citrus Fiber, Yeast, Millet Flour, Emulsifier (Mono and Diglycerides of fatty acids). May contain Sesame and Soy.
I was so thrilled to see this gluten-free bread sold at Costco! I brought it home and was happy the size of bread was better than many. However, the taste was bland and the texture not great. My kids wouldn’t eat it, like at all. Sadly, not one we will buy again.
Trader Joe’s White Sandwich Bread
Size: 2 out of 5 (3.5″x3.5″)
Taste: 2 out of 5
Texture: 1.5 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: Water, Tapicoa Starch, Potato Starch, Brown Rice Flour, Cane Sugar, Modified Tapioca Starch, Rice Flour with Cultured Rice Flour (for freshness), Expeller Pressed Canola Oil, Whole Grain Sorghum Flour, Xanthan Gum, Yeast, Egg Whites, Tapioca Maltodextrin, Baking Powder (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Bicarbonate, Potato Flour, Monocalcium Phosphate), Sea Salt, Calcium Sulfate, Enzymes. CONTAINS EGGS.
I love me some Trader Joe’s. I have a whole blog post about my favorite Trader Joe’s Gluten-free Dairy-free finds! But, this gluten-free sandwich bread isn’t great. The taste is ok. But the pieces are very small and the crust is HARDDD. Like, even as a grown-up I would be cutting that crust off. Which doesn’t leave you with much bread. Not one we will buy again.
Schar Artisan Bread
Size: 2 out of 5 (3″x4″)
Taste: 1.5 out of 5
Texture: 2 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: Water , sourdough (rice flour, water) , rice starch , corn starch , modified cellulose , caramelized sugar syrup , psyllium seed husk , sunflower oil , pea protein , yeast , millet flour , citrus fiber , rice flour , quinoa flour , salt , guar gum , corn flour , rice syrup. May Contain: Sesame.
I had high hopes for this one, as we have enjoyed many Schar products. Our favorite Schar gluten-free product is their gluten-free pizza crusts. On nights I don’t want to make my own pizza dough or time is short, their pizza crusts are our go-tos! But, the flavor on this bread was lacking and the texture wasn’t great. Nothing about it encouraged me to buy it again.
Little Northern Bakehouse Whole Grain Wide Slice
Size: 5 out of 5 (5″x4.5″)
Taste: 1.75 out of 5
Texture: 1.75 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: Water, Gluten-free flour blend (modified tapioca starch, corn starch, potato starch), Whole grain blend (whole brown rice flour, whole teff flour, whole millet, whole red quinoa), Sugars (raisin juice, dextrose, cane sugar), Sunflower oil, Psyllium husk, Yeast, Modified cellulose, Pea hull fibre, Salt, Rice bran, Vinegar, Cellulose gum, Cultured cane sugar, Enzymes.
I mean, you’ve got to give the props – this bread has no dairy, no gluten, no nuts, and no eggs! If you have those dietary restrictions, this one might be worth considering just to meet those parameters. But, as far as a gluten-free bread goes, it was very dry and bland. However, it was the largest piece of bread of those we tried.
Trader Joe’s Multigrain
Size: 3 out of 5 (3″x4.5″)
Taste: 2 out of 5
Texture: 2.25 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: WATER, STARCH AND FLOUR BLEND (MODIFIED TAPIOCA STARCH, BROWN RICE FLOUR, RICE STARCH, MODIFIED CELLULOSE, GUAR GUM), CANE SUGAR, WHOLE GRAIN SORGHUM FLOUR, FLOUR BLEND (WHOLE GRAIN SORGHUM FLOUR, AMARANTH FLOUR, MILLET FLOUR, TEFF FLOUR), YEAST, CANOLA OIL, DRIED EGG WHITES, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF WHOLE GRAIN ROLLED OATS, MILLET FLOUR, PSYLLIUM HUSK POWDER, SPROUTED FLOUR BLEND (MILLET FLOUR, BROWN RICE FLOUR, AMARANTH FLOUR, OAT FLOUR), SALT, INVERT SUGAR SYRUP, MOLASSES, CULTURED BROWN RICE (TO PRESERVE), BROWN RICE. CONTAINS EGG.
I was hoping this Trader Joe’s option would out-shine the sandwich bread. It better, and I appreciate the slices are bigger. But, it was just bland all around and not something to write home about.
365 White Bread
Size: 5 out of 5 (5″x4″)
Taste: 2.5 out of 5
Texture: 1.75 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: WATER, MODIFIED TAPIOCA STARCH, CORNSTARCH, POTATO STARCH, BROWN RICE FLOUR, SUNFLOWER SEED OIL, PSYLLIUM HUSK, DEXTROSE, CANE SUGAR, BUCKWHEAT FLOUR, YEAST, METHYLCELLULOSE, PEA FIBER, DISTILLED WHITE VINEGAR, SEA SALT, POWDERED EGG WHITES, RICE BRAN, CULTURED CANE SUGAR, CELLULOSE GUM. CONTAINS EGG.
I love how big the bread slices were – almost a normal sized piece of bread! The taste was ok, but the texture was dry and my 13 year old noted, “The crust is HARD and terrible.” It’s ok, there are just better options.
Gluten-free Bread that Gets the Job Done
These aren’t our top tier picks, but they work decently well if we can’t find our favorite brand. They all got at least a rating of 3 or higher for taste and texture. They are ranked from lowest to highest, with the higher ratings being towards the end of this section.
The Grain Escape White Bread
Size: 4 out of 5 (4″x4″)
Taste: 3 out of 5
Texture: 3 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: Water, Gluten-free flour blend (modified tapioca starch, potato starch, cassava flour), Sunflower oil, Sugars (cane sugar, tapioca dextrose), Psyllium husk, Yeast, Modified cellulose, Vinegar, Bamboo fibre, Sea salt, Cultured cane sugar, Cellulose gum
This one is nut-free, egg-free, plant-based, and certified Paleo. Great option if you need something with those parameters. The main complaint is the crust is HARD, I wouldn’t eat it.
Rudi’s Sourdough White
Size: 2 out of 5 (4″x2″)
Taste: 3 out of 5
Texture: 3 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: Water, modified tapioca starch, white sorghum flour, potato starch, brown rice flour, canola oil, sorghum syrup, dehydrated rice sourdough (fermented rice flour), yeast, psyllium husk fiber, rice bran, salt, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, distilled white vinegar, rice starch, cultured brown rice flour, guar gum, rice flour, sugarcane fiber, calcium sulfate, enzymes.
This one is nut-free, egg-free, plant-based, vegan, and soy-free. Not a favorite, but we’d eat it again and helpful if you need those additional allergen-friendly options.
Carbonaut White Bread
Size: 5 out of 5 (5″x4″)
Taste: 3.5 out of 5
Texture: 3 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: Resistant tapioca and/or resistant potato starch, Water, High oleic sunflower oil, Psyllium, Inulin, Yeast, Modified cellulose, Native cornstarch, Rice bran, Xanthan gum, Pea protein and/or fava bean protein, Salt, Natural flavor.
The only low-carb gluten-free bread we tried, it’s Keto, nut-free, plant-based, and egg-free. Nice large pieces of bread with a very soft texture. Some of my kids thought the soft texture was a little gummy though, and it does stick to your teeth a bit (why the texture rating isn’t higher). But, the flavor is good and overall an enjoyable choice. The crust is HARD though, we didn’t eat it.
Canyon Bakehouse Hawaiian Sweet
Size: 1 out of 5 (3.5″x3″)
Taste: 3 out of 5
Texture: 3.5 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: WATER, BROWN RICE FLOUR, TAPIOCA FLOUR, CANE SUGAR, WHOLE GRAIN SORGHUM FLOUR, EXPELLER PRESSED CANOLA OIL, CULTURED BROWN RICE FLOUR, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: POTATO STARCH, XANTHAN GUM, EGG WHITES, EGGS, YEAST, SEA SALT, ORGANIC CANE SUGAR VINEGAR, NATURAL FLAVOR, ENZYMES. CONTAINS: Egg
This one had a good taste and good texture. A good middle of the line option. Not as flavorful or sweet as I would think for Hawaiian bread. My biggest complaint about this one is the size – it was the SMALLEST piece of gluten-free bread we tried. The slices are tiny and my boys would need at least two sandwiches made with this bread to be full. I would get the other Canyon Bakehouse options below, if available, for that reason.
Canyon Bakehouse Country White
Size: 2 out of 5 (3.5″x3.5″)
Taste: 3.5 out of 5
Texture: 3.5 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: WATER, BROWN RICE FLOUR, TAPIOCA FLOUR, WHOLE GRAIN SORGHUM FLOUR, CANE SUGAR, POTATO STARCH, WHOLE GRAIN OAT FLOUR*, CULTURED BROWN RICE FLOUR, EXPELLER PRESSED CANOLA OIL, XANTHAN GUM, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: EGG WHITES, EGGS, YEAST, SEA SALT, ORGANIC CANE SUGAR VINEGAR, ENZYMES. *CERTIFIED GLUTEN-FREE. CONTAINS: Egg
Another good Canyon Bakehouse option. I would probably chose the honey white (below) over this country white just for the size difference, as this variety the slices are smaller. The crust is still a bit hard, but not as bad as the honey white crust.
Canyon Bakehouse Honey White

Size: 4 out of 5 (5″x3.5″)
Taste: 3.5 out of 5
Texture: 3.5 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: WATER, BROWN RICE FLOUR, TAPIOCA FLOUR, WHOLE GRAIN SORGHUM FLOUR, HONEY, POTATO STARCH, EGGS, CULTURED BROWN RICE FLOUR, CANE SUGAR, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: EXPELLER PRESSED CANOLA OIL, XANTHAN GUM, YEAST, EGG WHITES, SEA SALT, ORGANIC CANE SUGAR VINEGAR, ENZYMES. CONTAINS: Egg
For many years, this was a go-to bread. Good taste and large pieces of bread that actually could make a decent sized sandwich. The texture is a tad dry – we usually sauted it in vegan butter on both sides on the stove till golden to add more moisture and flavor for our sandwiches. It does have a crust that is just too thick/hard to be enjoyable. You find this one in the freezer section.
Franz Hawaiian Bread
Size: 3 out of 5 (4″x3.5″)
Taste: 3 out of 5
Texture: 4 out of 5
INGREDIENTS: Water, Brown Rice Flour, Tapioca Starch, Tapioca Syrup, Whole Grain Sorghum Flour, Xanthan Gum, Contains 2% or Less of Each of the Following: Dried Whole Egg, High Oleic Safflower Oil, Dextrose, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Stevia, Salt, Vinegar, Yeast, Enzymes. Allergen Info – Contains Eggs and their derivates.
This bread was nice and soft, which is so refreshing with gluten-free bread! Not dry or crumbly. The biggest downside to this bread was it’s size – a bit small and not big enough for a sandwich for my boys. For that reason, it didn’t make the favorites list below.

Honorable Mentions You Should Know About
These aren’t sliced bread, so they weren’t apple to apple comparisons to the bread above. But, they are awesome gluten-free options you should know about!
Trader Joe’s Gluten-free Buns (GF, DF)
(tap the above title to go to Trader Joe’s website for ingredients)
Let’s face it, most gluten-free buns are dry and a mouthful. These are the closest I have found to “normal”-tasting gluten-free buns AND they are the most affordable at $4.99 for 4 buns. We buy a bunch and throw them in the freezer for all the burger and sloppy joe nights to come.
Want your buns even less dry and more delicious? We saute our buns in vegan butter before using them. This is similar to how In-N-Out sautes their buns in butter and adds more moisture and flavor.
Gluten-free English Muffins (GF, DF)
(tap the above title to go to Trader Joe’s website for ingredients)
These are not the exact airy texture you’re used to with gluten English Muffins, but they are a solid option. We use them often for an egg and bacon Breakfast Sandwich that’s decently fast and easy but savory for a weekday morning. Like I describe in the gluten-free buns up above, we usually do saute these in vegan butter to get extra moisture and flavor. $4.49 for 4 muffins. Store great in the freezer!

I’m new to a gf diet – I am sensitive to wheat + celiac runs in my family so I have decided to give up wheat. Yes, bred is the hardest to give up so I so appreciate this post! Never heard of the frank brand, but will search it out and try. Also appreciate some of the other’s comments.
Changing to GF can feel like a whole new food vocabulary! I know it’s a LOT. So happy this could be a useful resource and big YES to trying the Franz bread – we love it!
So many gluten free breads live or die by their ingredient choices, and this breakdown really shows why some slices turn out soft while others are dry or crumbly. A lot of successful formulas use clean sweeteners like natural organic tapioca syrup to improve moisture and texture. Suppliers such as Shafi Gluco Chem play a key role here because their tapioca syrup gives gluten free dough a smoother structure and a more balanced sweetness. It is a small ingredient detail but it makes a noticeable difference in how enjoyable the final loaf feels.
You’re absolutely right — gluten-free breads can vary *so* much depending on the ingredient choices, and even tiny tweaks can make or break the texture. A clean sweetener that adds moisture and structure can definitely help prevent that dry, crumbly result gluten-free folks know all too well. Love the insight on how tapioca syrup supports a softer crumb and better balance overall. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
You need to find the brand Promise for gluten free bread. It’s the only one I’ve found that actually toasts well and has a variety of flavors or types of bread. Hamburger buns and hot dog buns.
Thanks for the recommendation! I haven’t seen or tried that one, but I will keep an eye out for it.
Thanks for testing all of these brands! I’ve tried most of the TJs GF breads and basically given up on GF bread lately. I’m going to source the Franz near me now! I’ve been missing sandwiches and grilled cheeses lately.
Absolutely! It can be so discouraging trying loaf after loaf that just doesn’t hit the mark—glad this roundup helped reignite your search. Franz has been a solid option for many; hope it brings sandwiches and grilled cheeses back into your life in a delicious way!
Thanks. This is super helpful!! I’ve tried a few that were just not good, so this saves me a lot of tasting!
So glad this was helpful! Gluten-free bread can definitely be hit or miss, so I’m happy to hear this saved you from some of the trial-and-error. Hope you find a favorite among the suggestions!
Yay thanks Autumn! Can you do tortillas next? 😄
Happy this review was helpful! Thanks for letting me know that you’d love to have a tortilla review as well.
The only bread we have found that actually tastes good is against the grain baguettes. The only issue if the harder crust. The slices are small-use for dipping in hot temp dips or softened in microwave & use as a hot dog bun.
The recipe for Brazillian Cheese bread is my husband’s favorite so I can make the huge buns anytime. They freeze well. He loves to “toast” them in a frying pan with butter. We both say it’s to closest in taste for gluten containing bread.
Thank you for sharing what’s worked for you both! The tip about frying the Brazilian cheese bread in butter sounds incredible—YUM. So glad you’ve found a go-to that feels like a win!
Wow Franz has really come forward with healthier bread options – and it looks like the fewer the ingredients the higher you rated it. Great analysis thank you!
So happy this was a helpful blog post! Thank you for your comment letting me know it was.
So glad someone I trust with flavors did this, the size and texture are so helpful as well! Thank you!
YAY! I’m so glad the details of this post were helpful. Some of these breads are just too small to be useful and texture makes a BIG difference in gluten-free bread. Thanks for letting me know!
